If you’re going to be in Austin, Texas on the weekend of September 24-25 this year, you should consider signing up for the 9th annual Get Out Girl Surf & Paddle Jam. The two day event–wake surf Saturday, paddleboard (or kayak) Sunday with after party and drinks, raffle and auction Sunday afternoon–is so much fun. All proceeds and donations provide events, experiences and equipment for individuals, agencies, first responders, military and surviving family members to utilize nature for positive mental and emotional wellness impact.
The all female event is held in honor of Kristin McClain, a Travis County Star Flight nurse and Jessica Hollis, a Travis County Sheriff Officer who lost their lives on duty in separate incidents. Both women used the water and water activities to counter the stresses of their jobs.
Did I mention this is fun? This will be my second year to attend in real time. (In 2020 I did a virtual option, paddling on my own over a couple of weeks.) No special skill is needed and you can go any distance you would like for the paddle jam. Lake Austin is absolutely beautiful year round. I’m hoping for the great weather we had last year again. I’m less familiar with the Surf Jam. A friend of mine who did both events last year told me she had a good time.
So, I hope to see you there. Check out the link below for more information:
