Before we left for our bike ride, I told my husband, only half-joking. “I’m not sure I remember how to ride a bike.” It had been a long time. We were excited to try out a new trail system that we thought would be good because it was paved and away from traffic. Still I was nervous. I’m not much of a bike rider. It did take me a little experimentation to remember how the gears on my bike work. Overall the ride was worth the numb hands and the sore rear. (I had gloves and padded shorts. I wonder what it would have been like if I hadn’t.) It was a much needed rut buster.
The bike ride reminded me of how important it is to have variety. Several of the podcasts I’ve been listening to this month have talked at length about how variety in food is important to our microbiome and health. When it comes to fitness, there are so many different activities and modalities we can use to stay fit. And it’s just important to stimulate your mind in different ways and to see new things. I have a tendency to get into a rut and do the same things over and over. I’m glad I changed things up.
