A small windfall fell into my lap a few weeks ago, and I decided to use it on a membership at a nice gym this summer. I thought it would be a good place to go in the afternoons when it’s hot. I’ve been a member for a couple of days. They have every conceivable piece of equipment. I like the pool and the sauna and the hot tub. I took a spin class this morning. It’s clean and there’s a machine in the locker room that spins your bathing suit to dry it out. There are lots and lots of clean towels.
It’s also an isolating environment. There were people all around me, but I don’t know anyone…yet. You sit in the sauna and everyone’s looking at their phones. I was explaining it to my daughter and she said, it’s a liminal space, a place where everyone’s passing through and there’s a buzz in the background. I’ll probably feel more comfortable there in a day or two. And the pool is great.
