Two good podcasts targeted at those of us in our third act

I have a long commute during the school year. Podcasts keep that time from being lost. Photo by Melanie Pongratz on Unsplash

In the last three weeks I’ve listened to an episode each from two podcasts directed at women who are older. They’re different in that one of them is by a famous actress, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the other one is a podcast that a friend of a friend has. I liked both of them a lot and each addressed my need for ideas and role models for aging well

Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus

I needed something to listen to while I was working out this morning and this was a Spotify suggestion. I listened to the first episode, an interview with Jane Fonda. People seem to either really like her or really dislike her. Whatever your opinion, she had some good insights on aging. This podcast is worth listening to and I plan to listen to more. Guests in other episodes include Isabel Allende, Fran Lebowitz, Ruth Reichl, Darlene Love, Diane von Furstenberg, Gina McCarthy, Amy Tan, Rhea Perlman and Carol Burnett.

Your Age is Not Your Cage by Carla Allen

When I was traveling a few weeks ago, a friend, Laura Pastor, texted me a link to this podcast because she had been interviewed on it about her experiences with breast cancer. “We’re all in this together,” she said. Even if my friend hadn’t been in this podcast, I would have thought it was good. Laura and Carla spoke openly about what it’s like to be so sick and to face that kind of existential crisis. Laura’s matter of fact outlook and optimism were inspiring to hear and applicable to many circumstances. Carla’s interviewing style is warm and the whole effect was of listening to a good conversation on a serious topic. I plan to listen to more episodes of this one too.
