If you’ve been reading my blog (and thank you if you have) you may have gathered that Simon Hill’s book, The Proof Is In the Plants and his podcast, The Proof, have my attention. I remember listening to my first episode of the podcast and thinking, ‘I hope this doesn’t lead to me trying veganism again.’ I thought that because a. I had tried veganism before and hadn’t enjoyed it and b. what he was saying made a lot of sense. Darn! Anyway, here I am 4 months later, not completely there and definitely leaning into it.
This does not come across as hard to do or angry veganism. Mr. Hill’s approach is very accepting of whatever people feel able to do with an emphasis on the considerable health benefits of eating a lot of plant-based foods. He has a master’s degree in nutrition, is into the science and is good at explaining complex concepts. Among the things I’ve learned is that if you’re over 50 (check) or vegan (as I said, leaning into it) you should consider taking B vitamin supplements. Apparently our bodies are not as good at absorbing vitamin B as we age. He gives clear directions in the book on how much and how often you should take it. He also talks a lot about the benefits of eating a diet that’s high in fiber. And he has a whole chapter on the benefits to the planet and the health of the global community if more people would switch to plant-based or plant predominant diets. The Proof Is In the Plants is a book that deserves a read and your consideration.
